DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) – Violence escalated in southern Philippines a day before the general elections, with a fire fight between supporters of local politicians leaving two dead.
The latest incident happened in Mindanao’s Davao del Sur province yesterday as armed civilian and military
escorts of mayor Ruel Paras and his opponent former mayor Jovil Mamaril figured in a clash yesterday night in Malalag town, Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza, a provincial army commander, said today.
Paniza said those killed were retired soldier James Salmorin and civilian Bobong Magallanes.
“While on a campaign sortie, the two groups met in the area and for still unknown reason, the fire fight erupted,” Paniza told Xinhua by phone, adding the two soldiers involved in the incident are now under police custody and are being investigated.
The victims were bodyguards of the incumbent mayor while the suspects are escorts of Mamaril’s, the military official said.
