MANILA, Philippines – The year 2010 literally ended with a bang in Manila.
Reports reaching the Manila Police District Public Information office showed that two people were killed and four hurt in gun-shooting incidents across the city on New Year’s eve.
Fernando Rivera, 57, a tricycle driver from Maceda St., Sampaloc, was shot dead at around 10:55 a.m. last Friday, as he was standing idly at a canteen along Maria Clara St. near Prudencio St., in the same district.
CCTV footage showed two helmet-wearing men riding past twice on a blue motorcycle. The second time, they stopped in front of Rivera and assaulted him before shooting him in the chest with a .45-caliber gun.
The gunmen took off with Rivera’s gold necklace allegedly worth P60,000. Case investigator PO2 Jupiter Tajonera, however, said that they were looking at other angles aside from robbery.
“It is curious. From my personal experience, robbers don’t usually strike in clear daylight and around so many people,” he said. He declined to reveal the other angle being investigated, but said it seemed the victim was targeted for murder.
He admitted it would be difficult to track the gunmen down, as the motorcycle had no plate number.
