Three people were killed, two of them policemen, in an encounter Wednesday afternoon in Basilan province, one of the provinces under the Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines.

Chief Superintendent Bienvenido Latag, regional director of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), said the encounter occurred when policemen tried to arrest a group of armed in Barangay Bakong in Sumisip town at around 3:30 p.m.

The slain policemen were identified only by their surnames: PO1 Haji and PO1 Arcenal, a member of the Special Action Force.

The other fatality was one of the suspects, Bienvenido said. — KBK, GMANews.TV
