2 car thieves killed in shootout

MABALACAT CITY, Pampanga — Two suspected car thieves were killed in a gun battle with authorities here Saturday morning.

Special Operation Group chief Supt. Ferdinand D. Perez identified the suspects as Benjie Santos, 30, and Alex Magbanua, 24, both of No. 74 Riverside, Mawaque Resettlement Center, this city.

Prior to the shootout, a certain Joselito Santos of Camachiles Phase 2 reported to the police that his black motorcycle was stolen while parked unattended on Camachiles Road.

That same time, the Mabalacat police were informed that two unidentified men on a motobike robbed Peter Dan Figueroa, 23,  a lending collector of Mersan  & Sons Company and a resident of No. 09 Rizal St., Poblacion, Sto. Tomas, Pampanga.

The suspects forcibly took from Figueroa, who was walking on 27th St., Mawaque Resettlement Center, his P14,500 cash collection.   

Perez immediately deployed his men to the area, who later spotted Santos and Magbanua on Sitio Mauli, Sapang Biabas.

The police officers tried to intercept the suspects but they got off the motorcycle and escaped on foot.

The police said the suspects fired shots at them but missed and a brief gun battle ensued.

One of the suspects died- on-the-spot while his cohortwho sustained serious injuries, was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead-upon-arrival by Dr. Alta Lacanlale of the Mabalacat District Hospital.

Recovered from the suspects were P 1,940 cash  believed to be part of the money taken Figueroa and a .38 cal. revolver.

The stolen motorcycle of Santos was also recovered.

Trike driver Moises San Miguel,59, of No. 233 Sto Rosario, Magalang , Pampanga, positively identified the two as the same persons who robbed him  last Nov. 17 at 4:30 a.m. in Bgy. Sto Rosario, Magalang.
