WO barangay officials were killed while another survived an assassination try by unidentified gunmen in the countryside this week as police and military troops tightened their watch on at least 2,300 villages where violence may erupt during the Sangguniang Kabataan and barangay elections on October 25.
The victims were identified as Mauro Abad Jr., a councilman of Bgy. Nagsabaran in Bacnotan, La Union, and Noel Ape, chairman of Bgy. Maguiling in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.
Abad, a 47-year-old widower, was cutting grass near the rice mill of Redentor Lichaoa when shot by an unidentified motorcycle-riding gunman at 4:55 p.m. Thursday.
In Negros Occidental, gunmen killed the 48-year-old Ape for still unknown reasons. The victim had just arrived home when he was shot by the suspects.
In Nueva Ecija, still unidentified gunmen tried to kill Eudande Pader, 53, chairman of Bgy. Rizal, Cuyapo town at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Police said the victim attended a meeting called by the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources at the Cuyapo municipal building and was on his way to the barangay hall in an official vehicle when he was shot by the suspects without any provocation.
The victim was able to return fire at the suspects who were forced to flee towards the nearby Sitio Butao in Bgy. San Antonio. Police recovered 13 cal. .45 shells at the scene.
The reports on the attacks against the barangay officials came a day after Philippine National Police chief Director General Raul M. Bacalzo said at least 2,300 out of the total 42,000 barangays are being watched by security forces for potential election-related violence.
The PNP chief said a total of 107 partisan armed groups are also being monitored by security forces. “We’re in the process of delisting some and listing some as the validation continues,” he said.
