MANILA, Philippines—Two men who were allegedly involved in the shooting of a 40-year-old man were arrested Sunday morning following a brief chase by police operatives and barangay security officers in Quezon City.
The two were identified as Jomaro Lata, 34; and Ricky Estro, 41, a utility worker; both residents of Violago Homes in Barangay Pasong Tamo in the city.
Case investigator PO2 Loreto Tigno of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said the men were believed to be involved in the fatal shooting of a man at a neighboring barangay.
The victim, Eddie Barbaron, 40, a resident of Green Village Subdivision in Barangay Tandang Sora, died after he was allegedly shot by Lata.
Two witnesses told the police that they were chatting in front of Alley 2 Resto Bar at the corner of Visayas and Congressional Avenues when they noticed a commotion.
They claimed that when they tried to find out what was happening, they saw Lata armed with a gun chasing after the victim.
The witnesses said they immediately called the attention of barangay watchmen Oliver Molina and Eduardo Manese who were on patrol in the area.
Lata, however, suddenly shot the victim in the head. When chased by barangay watchmen, he tried to lose them by running into alleys and side streets, they added.
Unknown to the barangay watchmen, two off-duty policemen, PO3 Charles Jallores and PO2 Ronnie Camba, had overheard the commotion and saw Lata running into a dimly lit alley.
They also saw him seeking refuge in a house which turned out to belong to Estro.
The policemen then informed the barangay officials and joined them in going after the gunman.
Lata initially tried to evade arrest but after several minutes of negotiations, the policemen eventually convinced him to give himself up peacefully.
The off-duty policemen also apprehended Estro, the owner of the house Lata had sought refuge in.
The case against them was later referred to the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office.
