AMBOANGA CITY, Philippines—(UPDATE) At least 11 people were abducted in Basilan in what police said could be an offshoot of a family feud.
Basilan police director Senior Superintendent Rey Cristeto Gonzalodo said the mass abduction took place in Sitio (sub-village) Layohan in Barangay (village) Matata in Ungkaya Pukan town last Saturday.
“We only received the report yesterday (Monday) from a former mayor of Ungkaya Pukan. The villages are remote and there’s a problem with (cell phone) signal or communication in the area,” Gonzalodo said.
For his part, police spokesman Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said the 11 were seized by around 10 armed men. Citing reports received from a former local official of the town, he said the 11 victims just came back from a fishing trip and were on their way home when they were waylaid by the armed men at around 4 p.m.
The suspects were led by a certain Commander Puwi Ambali.
They were allegedly demanding firearms and a still undetermined amount of cash for the release of the 11 suspects.
Cruz identified victims as follows: Ummal Tahil, Hamja Tahil, Tolloh Kuhapoh, Rolly Dalis, Faisal Aukasa, Pikal Pobo, Haymi Taugung, Samboy Kuhapoh, Dayson Dalis, Pandemeng Jamil, and Danny Aukasa.
