Government forces shot and killed one of the kidnappers of Swiss-Filipino Charlie Rieth in an encounter at the vicinity of barangays San Ramon and Sinubong Wednesday night.
Killed was Ibno Kaiz, a native of Basilan. His two companions escaped amid a gunfight with the police and soldiers.
Kaiz sustained multiple bullet wounds in the body and died on the spot.
A police report disclosed that policemen and soldiers were conducting a follow-up operation after Rieth was rescued in Labuan at dawn Wednesday when they received information that some of the kidnappers were still in the areas of Sinubong and San Ramon.
The policemen and soldiers swooped down on the place and spotted Kaiz and his two companions trying leave the place hastily.
Police and military retrieved the body of Kaiz and recovered from his possession a .45 caliber pistol.
A police report said that Kaiz was the courier who sent the video footage of Rieth to the Crisis Management Committee and the one who was negotiating the ransom for Rieth’s freedom.
Kaiz’ body was brought to the Villa Funeral Parlor for post mortem examination.
