1 killed as gang men clash with cops in Bukidnon

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) – One person was killed and three others were wounded when policemen clashed with a criminal gang in Bukidnon province today.

Lieutenant Colonel Michele Anayron, spokesman of the Army’s Fourth Infantry Division, said the incident happened in Talakag town, Bukidnon at 3:15 a.m. today. He said Talakag policemen were conducting a patrol in the village of Mirayon when they encountered some 15 gunmen that led to a 20-minute firefight.

A suspect died instantly while two policemen and another suspect sustained gunshot wounds and had to be evacuated to the nearest hospital. The other suspects escaped.

Anayron aid the suspects belonged to the Luminda criminal gang, a local militia engaged in robbery and extortion activities in the area.

Today’s clash came three days after a German national was robbed and killed by unidentified men inside his home in Talakag town proper. Police are now investigating if the suspects could be the foreigner’s attackers.
