CEBU CITY—A RETIRED PROSEcutor has been found dead past 11 a.m. Sunday inside his house in Camella Homes in Lawaan, Talisay City.
Supt. Henry Biñas, chief of the Talisay City Police Office, said former Regional State Prosecutor Hernando Masangkaya, 72, suffered a stab wound in the neck and was in undershirt and underwear in bed when found by relative Karl Stephen Montenegro.
Montenegro, a nephew of Masangkaya’s late wife, had been asked by the slain judge’s daughter, Niña, who is in Dubai, and son, Ormoc-based Reggie, to check on their father as they could not contact him since Friday last week.
Masangkaya has been living alone because his three children, Niña, Carlo and Reggie worked outside Cebu.
Biñas said Masangkaya’s body was in a state of decomposition when he was found, leading police to believe that Masangkaya was killed more than 24 hours before he was found.
He said police did not find the weapon used to stab the judge, adding that there was no sign of forced entry.
Biñas said police were pursuing personal grudge as a possible motive in the killing. However, he refused to elaborate.
Biñas said Masangkaya being killed because of his stint as prosecutor was a remote possibility because he retired in 2004.
Biñas said robbery was also not likely the motive because Masangkaya’s valuables and money were intact.
He said the former driver of Masangkaya, a minor, was considered as a suspect.
Biñas said police had invited the minor for questioning but he was released because there was no basis to detain him.
The minor had claimed that he had stopped driving for Masangkaya since May.
Aside from the minor, Biñas said police have other suspects, whom he refused to name.
