Two suspected motorcycle-riding robbers were shot dead in a reported encounter with police in Laguna province before dawn Friday, moments after their final heist.
Laguna police director Superintendent Raul Bargamento said the incident occurred about 2:30 a.m., when a police team blocked the suspects’ escape route.
“Unfortunately di huminto ang motor, binaril pa ang mobile so nagkaroon ng engkwentro(Unfortunately for the suspects, they fired at the policemen so there was an encounter),” Bargamento said in an interview on dzBB radio.
He did not immediately identify the suspects, but said handguns were recovered from them. The suspects were on a black motorcycle with no license plate.
Bargamento said there were no casualties on the government side, but the mobile patrol car was riddled with bullets from the suspects’ gunfire.
Citing initial reports reaching him, Bargamento said the two suspects snatched the bag of a woman at about 2 a.m. in Calamba City.
A police team, acting on an alert from the city police headquarters, intercepted the suspects’ motorcycle in Batino village.
“Madilim ang area na ito, rough road ang daanan. Alam namin ang ruta na pinagdadaan nila (The escape route is a dark area with rough roads. We knew the suspects would take this escape route),” Bargamento said of the area where the encounter occurred. — RSJ/LBG, GMANews.TV
