Police nab 2 suspects in Bravo slay attempt

POLICE yesterday arrested two men who claimed responsibility for the May 24 attack on public works assistant regional director Mauro Bravo and the killing of his driver in Bulua.

The suspects, Romulo Jacob and Anthony Saul Ronto a.k.a. Romando Soleman, were arrested following a chase from a checkpoint to a subdivision in Bulua.

The suspects allegedly admitted that they were responsible for the May 24 ambush that resulted in the killing of Engr. Bravo’s driver, Avaise Sombreo. Bravo was wounded in the attack.

Ronto, one of the suspects, said they were hired to kill the director of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Region 10, Jerome dela Rosa.

He claimed he and Jacob were paid P200 thousand to kill dela Rosa. He called the official ‘‘corrupt”.

The suspect said they were contracted in Manila and they were subsequently given instructions through letters.

Police said they were looking for a third suspect, a woman, who has been taking care of the men’s food and expenses in the city.

The other suspect, Jacob who is said to be from western Samar, allegedly confessed to being involved in the attack on Bravo and Sombreo before Senior Supt. Benedicto Lopez, the city’s police director.

SPO4 Jerry Abella said officers became suspicious of the suspects near Apovel Subdivision and drew their weapons when the police moved towards them.

Police said the suspects were waiting and looking for an opportunity to attack dela Rosa.

He said the suspects sped off toward Apovel which is near the DPWH regional office.

Police said the suspects fired shots when officers demanded to see some identification. A driver, Florentino Tagapulot, was wounded.

Abella said the officers chased the suspects; one allegedly threw a grenade at the police near a basketball court but it did not go off.

Abella said this prompted the police to shoot and hit Soleman in the shoulder. The wounded suspect was rushed to the JR Borja Memorial Hospital where he allegedly confessed to being involved in the Bravo ambush.

Abella said the suspects yielded two caliber .45 pistols and two grenades.

Police also seized a red motorcycle used by the suspects. It bears license plates KF 8450.

Investigators said they were still trying to squeeze the suspects for information at presstime in hopes of identifying the Bravo ambush mastermind.
