CANDELARIA, Quezon — Seven hours after stabbing to death a lesbian who owns a piggery and dry goods store and wounding her cousin and her store keeper, one of the two suspects were arrested by pursuing police operatives in Bgy. Mangilag Norte, here.
Town police commander Supt. Francisco Ebreo said Eric Parani, 22, native of Catarman, Northern Samar and piggery worker of the victim, tried to evade arrest but was quickly collared by policemen inside the house of his cousin where he was previously residing. His brother and co-worker Lito, 28, however, escaped.
Ebreo said the killing happened at around 1:20 a.m. while the victim, Potenciana Caringal Bejer, 48, was asleep at the living room of her house along with cousin Alvin Caringal, 23, and storekeeper Racquel Mercado, 38, and her three-year-old adopted child.
Right after the duo barged into the house, Ebreo said Eric, who was armed with a knife, quickly stabbed the victim 11 times, hitting her in different parts of the body.
When Caringal was awakened by the noise, he was hit by Lito with a pipe several times in the shoulder, he said.
Ebreo said Mercado also sustained wounds when she was hit by the pipe while the child was unharmed.
The trio were rushed to the hospital by neighbors but Bejer was declared dead on arrival.
Upon learning of the incident, Ebreo said he immediately dispatched a police team to track down the fleeing suspects and another team to conduct a follow-up operation that led to the suspect’s arrest.
In her statement, Mercado said that on Tuesday afternoon, Bejer scolded the two suspects for being lazy in their work.
“Pareho po silang pinagalitan ni mam (Bejer) kahapon dahil sa kanilang katamaran sa trabaho. Sinabihan pa nga sila ni mam na kapag sa sasapit na umaga ay hindi pa nila nahakot iyong mga ipa na pagkain ng baboy ay babarilin n’ya silang dalawa,” Ebreo quoted Mercado as saying.
He said Bejer is known in the village to be feisty especially when angry.
At the municipal jail, Ebreo said Eric admitted the crime, saying he and his brother could no longer keep their patience.
But he explained that they did not plan to kill their employer.
