COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Sept. 19, 2010) – A lone gunman shot and killed a Muslim peace advocate in an attack in the southern Filipino city of Cotabato, police said.
Police said Assib Ibrahim was gunned down late Saturday afternoon while eating at a roadside café in downtown Cotabato. The attack occurred ahead of a peace summit Tuesday which Ibrahim helped organized for the troubled Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Ibrahim was the one of five commissioners of the Regional Reconciliation and Unification Council of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Police said Ibrahim was killed instantly in the attack and that the shooter had been arrested during a pursuit operation later in the day. The attacker is believed to be a hired killer, but police did not say who ordered the murder or the motive of the killing.
Cotabato City, once tagged by the United States as a “doormat” of terrorists in the southern Philippines, is one of the most dangerous places in Mindanao with gun attacks occurring almost every day and had been a target of terror attacks in recent years. (Mindanao Examiner)
