MANILA, Philippines—A Pasig City councilor was wounded Wednesday morning after an unidentified gunman shot him at a vacant lot beside his house in Pasig City.
Three-term councilor Roberto Benito, 55, was engaged in a conversation with friends near his house on Eusebio Street in Barangay San Miguel on Monday around 8:30 a.m. when a man shot him several times, Senior Superintendent Jesse Cardona, Pasig police chief said.
The police said the gunman at first pretended to be a constituent asking for financial help, then suddenly drew a pistol and shot Benito in the face.
The man also shot the councilor in the knees and abdomen, said SPO4 Roberto Garcia, investigator on the case.
He hurriedly fled with two other men aboard a motorcycle and headed towards Cainta town in Rizal province.
The police said Benito was out of danger as of Wednesday afternoon but remained confined at Medical City Hospital for gunshot wounds.
A police official who requested anonymity said the shooting could be politically motivated. Benito is currently the chair of the city council’s committee on labor and transportation.
The victim had gone after traffic violators and colorum drivers because of this position in the city council, he added.
The councilor’s son, Orlando, also won as barangay chair of San Miguel, Pasig City, in the October elections.
