At least one member of the communist New People’s Army was killed in an encounter with government troops in Quezon province.
The encounter started early Sunday in Real town, radio dzBB’s Southern Luzon affiliate Peewee Bacuño reported.
Sketchy initial information indicated that as of Sunday afternoon, some of the rebels were fleeing with members of the Army in pursuit, the report added.
The government has put off formal peace talks with the NPA’s political arm, the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, and is looking for an alternative way of talking peace.
Meanwhile, Sunday’s encounter came a day after a deadly clash between government troops and the Abu Sayyaf bandit group in Patikul, Sulu.
