JOINT police and military forces encountered on Friday in Batangas a big-time robbery group, whose members include policemen, agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and a foreigner, the police said.

The joint police-military force killed a member of the robbery group and arrested five other members in successive operations in the province.

In a belated report, Senior Supt. Alberto Supapo, Batangas provincial police director, identified the fatality as June Paycana, an alleged NBI agent and a resident of Lopez, Quezon.

Arrested were suspects Falconery Sabiniano, 32, operations officer of the Arman Carpio Sanchez Investigation and Security Agency and a resident of barangay Manghinao, Bauan, Batangas; Rodel Mayo, 42, an alleged NBI asset and resident of barangay Talolong, Lopez, Quezon; Hassouna M’Nasseur, 21, tourism student in Batangas and a native of Bizerta, Tunisia, who is temporarily residing in barangay Gulod Labac, Batangas City; Senior Police Officer 2 Rodrigo Endozo, member of the Lemery, Batangas, police station; and Elmer Tiama, 50, of barangay Gomez, Lopez, Quezon.

Policemen are hunting Police Officer 3 Eleuterio Yurag, 44, member of the Linapacan police station in Palawan; Joseph Santos of San Juan, Batangas; NBI agent Francisco Maulawin; Antonio Sabiniano, 58, of White Beach, Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro and three others.

Supapo said the suspects, wearing bonnets and bearing high-powered firearms, entered two houses in barangay Talahib Pandayan, Batangas City, at about 8 p.m. on Friday and declared a robbery.

A couple, Gregorio and Ester Lumanglas, who were in one of the two houses, ran away, prompting the suspects to fire at them, but missed.

Alarmed by the gunshots, troops of the 741st Combat Squadron of the Air Force, who are on special operations training nearby, went to the houses to check, but they were fired upon by the suspects, triggering a shootout.

Supapo said that in the middle of the firefight, some of the suspects fled toward the sea and boarded a motorized banca.

Riddled with bullet holes, the banca sank after several minutes.

Several hours later, Mayo, who escaped from the sunken boat by swimming, was arrested in the costal area of barangay Banalo, Lobo, Batangas.

At about 9:30 a.m. the following day, policemen also captured M’Nasseur, who, it turned out, also managed to swim away from the sinking banca.

Three   hours   later,   Endozo and Tiama were also arrested by an Air Force team.

During the investigation, it was found out that Yurag, Santos, Maulawin and Sabiniano were also in the same banca but escaped.

Government forces recovered from the scene of the encounter four empty caliber .45 shells; eight empty caliber .30 shells; three empty caliber Super .38 shells; a tear-gas canister; black bonnets; and a caliber Super .38 pistol with live ammunition.
