MANILA (UPDATE)– A Liberal Party (LP) supporter and former campaign coordinator was wounded in a shooting incident after the party-led coalition’s proclamation rally in Manila on Tuesday evening.
Police said Yassin Ebrahim, a former campaign coordinator of the party in Quiapo district, was eating in a restaurant with his cousin when he was shot at close range by a still unidentified gunman at around 7 p.m.
The gunman immediately fled the scene and was seen walking towards the Quiapo Golden Mosque.
Supt. Ricky Layog, Manila Police Station 3 Commander, said Ebrahim sustained two gunshot wounds to the chest, but is now in stable condition in Medical Center Manila.
Ebrahim’s cousin, Bong Alonto, said he is puzzled why someone was able to bring a gun to the area given the tight security.
“Proclamation rally ito, lahat ng kandidato nandyan. Lahat ng enforcer ng pamahalaan nandyan. Paano nakapagdala ng baril doon at nabaril ang isang supporter, pinsan ko?” Alonto said.
Team PNoy Spokesperson Miro Quimbo, meanwhile, clarified that the shooting incident occurred after the proclamation rally. He said the shooting was not politically motivated.
Layog said they are looking into two possible reasons behind the attempt at Ebrahim’s life. He said money may have been involved in the attempted murder, since Ebrahim runs a money lending business.
He said Ebrahim, a former administrator of the Golden Mosque, may have also angered some people in the area due to some of his policies.
“Naging administrator siya ng Golden Mosque so may mga kwento ang mga tao na hindi niya pinapayagang makapasok ng mosque dahil basta lang po sila nagtatayo ng mga bahay doon sa loob ng Golden Mosque,” Layog told dzMM.
Layog said Ebrahim himself does not believe that the shooting was politically motivated, noting that the last post he held was in 1997 as a barangay kagawad (councilman).
“Inamin niya po, sinasabi niya na walang halong pulitika. Although dati tumakbo siyang kagawad sa area at nanalo siya pero that was 1997 pa,” Layog said.
Ebrahim’s father-in-law, also a barangay official, was killed last year. – with a report from Francis Faulve, ABS-CBN News
