CAGAYAN DE ORO – Sofronie Bombeo, a 52-year-old Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) lay minister, died after sustaining 12 gunshot wounds on Thursday night.

Bombeo, after celebrating mass on Thursday, joined a small group for dinner at a function hall near the IFI Cathedral in Libertad, Misamis Oriental wherein two still unidentified armed men shot at them.

Bombeo sustained gunshot wounds in his chest, stomach, hands and feet that eventually led to his death. His companions, Santos Acain, Felixberto Villarin, Crispin May Poblete, Lucita Ceballo, and Cocoy Juliada, meanwhile, were shot in their legs and feet.

Libertad police SPO1 Marcel Nangkil said the motive may have been extreme anger toward the victim due to the number of gunshot wounds sustained by the people involved.

Police recovered 9mm bullets and several cartridge cases of still unidentified firearms.

Investigations are still ongoing. — with a report from Joy Labrador, ABS-CBN Cagayan de Oro
