MANILA, Philippines—Three robbers killed on Monday afternoon a junkshop owner in Quezon City who, already wounded in the shoulder and the legs,  tried to chase them after they robbed him of some P85,000 in cash, police said.

The robbers gunned down LVM junkshop owner Leonilo Marquez, 49, of Panday Pira Street, Doña Rosario Subdivision in Barangay Novaliches Proper, who attempted to recover the stolen money from them.

Marquez was declared dead on arrival at the Bernardino General Hospital. He had several gunshot wounds on the body and legs.

Police Officer 2 Julius Caesar Balbuena  of the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, said that the robbery happened at 12:30 p.m. Monday inside the junkshop at the corner of Reynaldo and General Luis Streets, Brgy Nagkaisang Nayon in Novaliches.

Balbuena said that before the robbery, Marquez asked his secretary Marissa Ocampo to withdraw cash from a nearby Metrobank branch. While the secretary, who had just returned with the money, was speaking with her employer, three armed men barged into the junkshop and declared the hold-up. When Marquez tried to fight off the robbers, he was shot in the shoulder and in the legs.

As soon as Ocampo handed over her shoulder bag containing the money, the men hurriedly left but the junkshop owner would not let up. According to Balbuena the wounded Marquez chased the fleeing robbers, who saw him in pursuit.

The robbers repeatedly shot Marquez until he keeled over on the pavement before fleeing on their motorcycle. The junkshop owner was taken  by his employees to the nearest hospital but their efforts to save him proved futile.

Balbuena said they were looking into the possibility that the victim’s secretary could have been followed by the robbers from the bank.
