Lawyer Ernesto Salunat was shot by still unidentified gunmen after coming out of municipal trial court here and was boarding his white BMW at 8:15 a.m., Superintendent Joselito Buenaobra, Solano police chief, said.
Salunat, a former Northern Luzon governor of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, is known as among the few human rights lawyers in the province.
In the run-up to the May 2010 elections, he served as the provincial campaign manager of the Liberal Party, and is a staunch critic of rival party Abante Vizcaya.
Initial investigation revealed that two motorcycle-riding men waited for Salunat at the parking lot, and held their post near his car.
The lawyer sustained two gunshot wounds on his nape and shoulder from a firearm of still unknown caliber. He was rushed to the MMG Hospital but was pronounced dead at around 10 a.m.
Buenaobra said they were still looking at the possible motives for the attack, and the identity of the assassins, based on witnesses accounts.
