COTABATO CITY, Philippines—The house of a businessman who died preventing the kidnapping of his daughter came under attack on Friday when unidentified men lobbed a hand grenade into it, police said yesterday.

No one was hurt in the 1 a.m. attack at the house of Allan Tamayo in Pigcawayan, North Cotabato, but it highlighted the helplessness of authorities against a spate of crimes perpetrated with impunity in the area.

The grenade explosion damaged a car owned by the Tamayo family, according to Chief Insp. Abello Junggaya.

The attack was the second on the Tamayo family following the attempted kidnapping and rescue of Allan’s nine-year-old daughter on Dec. 17.

A suspect in the kidnapping had been killed by a mob that came to help the Tamayos. Another suspect was arrested by police during a chase that led to where the criminals were keeping the girl.

Junggaya said no one in the Tamayo family knew there was a grenade attack until a smoke billowed from the car park.

“They initially thought it was just a firecracker explosion,” he said, adding that residents have been regularly setting off firecrackers in the town due to the holidays.

No one has claimed responsibility for the grenade attack, which remains a puzzle to authorities, Junggaya said.

Junggaya said they still could not determine whether or not the grenade attack was related to the kidnapping.Edwin Fernandez, Inquirer Mindanao
