COTABATO CITY, Philippines—A former village councilor in Aleosan town, North Cotabato, and his younger brother were killed in a shootout with a group of government-backed militiamen from the neighboring town of Pikit, a military official disclosed Friday.

Colonel Prudencio Asto, information chief of the 6th Infantry Division, said the shootout took place on Thursday in Barangay (village) Dunguan in Aleosan between Civilian Volunteer Organization members led by a certain “Taun” and a group led by Daud Sampayan, 40.

Sampayan and brother Kamarudin, 35, both residents of Barangay Bagolibas, Aleosan, died in the shootout.

Asto said the military had yet to determine what triggered the shooting between the two groups but added it “could be personal in nature or had something to do with the October 25 barangay elections.”

He said while the victims were from Aleosan, the CVOs of Taun were from the adjacent town of Pikit.

Elements of the Army’s 40th Infantry Battalion, who were deployed in the area, failed to arrest any of the perpetrators, Asto said.
