MANILA, Philippines – The doctor who saved the life of a political adviser of Cainta Mayor Mon Ilagan was shot dead Friday inside a passenger bus.

Dr. Joel Santos, 37, of 651 Masinag street, Riverside Subdivision in Cainta died while being treated at the Manila East Medical Center (MEMC).

Santos was one of the doctors who saved the life of Jaime de Leon, 57, executive assistant of Ilagan.

De Leon was critically wounded when one of three motorcycle-riding men shot him during a meeting Thursday night.

Several hours after saving De Leon, Santos rode an air-conditioned bus on his way home, according to Senior Superintendent Rolando Anduyan, Rizal police director.

Unknown to Santos, two suspects followed him and one of them pulled out a handgun and shot him at close range.

After seeing Santos slumped on his seat, the suspects jumped out of the bus and escaped on a motorcycle.

The bus driver and passengers rushed Santos to the hospital but to no avail.

Anduyan said they are investigating if the killing of Santos is related to the shooting of De Leon.

De Leon is also the political operator of Ilagan’s wife, Veron, who is seeking to replace him as mayor in the May polls.

De Leon was talking with Rizal board member Zoilo Tolentino and barangay leader Rey Boiser when one of the three suspects shot him in the nape.

The local government of Cainta has offered a P300,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects in the shooting of De Leon.
