THE convoy of Ruth de Lara Guingona, Mayor of Gingoog City, together with six PNP escorts while on their way back from Alagatan, Gingoog City to the city proper after attending a fiesta celebrations were waylaid/ambushed by undetermined number of armed men at Sitio Dumayokod, Brgy Binakalan, Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental.

A firefight ensued between the PNP security and armed men that lasted for about 10 mins.

As a result, Mayor Guingona who sustained abrasions was extracted from the ambush site. PO3 Rolando Benemirito was also wounded while two civilians who were onboard in the Mayor’s vehicle were killed.

Mayor Guingona and PO3 Benemirito were brought to the hospital where the Mayor was declared out of danger.

Joint operatives of the police and the army are conducting pursuit operations in the area.
