URBIZTONDO, Pangasinan — A suspected member of a cattle rustling group, said to be operating in Central Pangasinan, was killed in an encounter with joint police operatives yesterday morning.
Police recovered at the scene two live cows and another dead.
The fatality was identified as a certain Remegio Bulatao, 59, of Bgy. Balite Sur, San Carlos City. Balite Sur is known to be a lair of cattle rustlers.
Senior Insp. Ryan Manongdo, Pangasinan Police PIO, said the encounter occurred at about 3:30 a.m. in Bgy. Batangcaoa, Urbiztondo.
Investigators said a report had reached the town police that unidentified armed men carted away several heads of cow from Bgy. Batancaoa.
Immediately, an aggressive operation was launched jointly by members of the town police station led by Chief Insp. Domingo Eden, and the Bayambang Police Station and Pangasinan Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC) led by Supt. Gaston Gafontan.
Police pursued the direction taken by the suspects using the footmarks of the cows and caught up with them in Bgy. Batangcaoa.
Instead of giving up, the suspects fired at the pursuing policemen who promptly retaliated, killing the suspect and recovering two live cows, a dead cow believed to have been hit during the gunfight, an improvised shotgun and a hand grenade.
