MANILA, Philippines—A two-year-old conflict came to a head on Christmas Day when a man opened fire on his neighbors, wounding six of them, including a three-year-old child, in Tondo, Manila.

The gunman, identified as Edwin Galang, 38, was also wounded when an off-duty policeman shot him in the chest.

Galang was taken to Sta. Ana Hospital where he remains confined and under the guard of policemen.

Police said Galang’s neighbors on Navarro Street in Tondo described him and his brother as troublemakers. In 2008, Galang’s brother figured in a drunken brawl with some residents while last year, Galang pointed a gun at several of his neighbors, leading to the filing of a complaint against him.

A witness, Israel Santillan, told the police that he and his friends were drinking on Saturday, Christmas Day, when Galang approached them and fired upon the group.

“It was like New Year’s Eve. The shots came one after the other,” Santillan said in Filipino.

Those who were wounded were Neile Chester Ganantial; Romeo Ganantial; Maita Vanessa Duag, 24; Jheszon Vhien Peralus, 3; Bongbong Gorgon; and Aldrin Manlapaz, 21.

The Ganantials and Gorgon remain confined in separate hospitals, the police said.

Galang, on the other hand, was shot by Senior Police Officer 2 Benjamin Lumbad who was helping bring the wounded to the hospital.
