6 soldiers, civilian die in NPA ambush
Mountain Province: SIX SOLDIERS and a civilian were killed on Friday when communist rebels fired at their truck in Bontoc town, military reports said.
Colonel Rogelio Migote, commander of the Army’s 50th Infantry Battalion, said the soldiers were on their way to the town proper to prepare for a medical mission scheduled for Saturday when their truck was fired at by New People’s Army rebels in Barangay Samoki at 11:45 a.m.
Killed were First Lieutenant Lito Punio, Cpl. Cornelio Balmes, Privates First Class Wendell Gazzingan, Danilo Toquino and James Toy-an, S/Sgt. Nestor Castro, and Anthony Bunagan, a civilian who hitched a ride with the soldiers.
Migote said the rebels fled after taking five M-16 rifles, two M-203 grenade launchers, bullets and the soldiers’ belongings. Villamor Visaya Jr., Inquirer Northern Luzon
