Don’t give toy guns as Christmas gifts – CBCP

Philstar.com – Monday, December 20

MANILA, Philippines – An official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) urged today the public not to give toy guns as gifts this Christmas.

CBCP Media Office director Msgr. Pedro Quitorio III said toy guns work against the Christmas message of harmony and peace.

“Don’t give anti-Christmas gifts like toy gun and laser sword. [Gifts] should be anything that will represent peace and salvation,” Quitorio said.

Quitorio said it is better if parents and godparents will give the children gifts that they can use in school.

“We encourage parents to teach their children about the importance of peace through gift giving,” said Quitorio. (Helen M. Flores) – By Helen M. Flores (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

  1. Correction: This is only his personal opinion, and is NOT an official statement of the CBCP. Anyone, including Msgr. Quitorio (who’s he anyway?) is entitled to his opinion. Incidentally, there is nothing in the Catholic Doctrine which prohibits guns, toys or real, as immoral or contrary to the law of God. In fact there is a Catholic Saint Gabriel Possenti, who used two pistols that he was carrying to stop a band of brigands and robbers from robbing some helpless town folks.

So maybe we will write to Msgr. Quitorio to remind him of Catholic doctrine, of which he apparently is ignorant of.
