THE New Peoples’ Army (NPA) violated their own ceasefire as they killed a soldier the other night in Barangay Kalabugao, Impasugong, Bukidnon.

The fatality was identified as PFC Akmad Maruhom who died due to multiple gunshot wounds in the body.

The incident was condemned by Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division (ID) chief Major General Ricardo Visaya, saying that the incident transpired on the day that the government and the rebels declared ceasefire to give way to the traditional Christmas Day celebration.

“This is a clear violation of the CPP’s declaration of ceasefire. It only shows that they are deceptive of their pronouncements. In fact, they intend on sowing fear and violence in local communities. More so, they are anti-development and anti-poor,” Visaya said.

It can be recalled that the CPP-NPA declared a six-day ceasefire from December 24, 25, 26 and December 31 to January 1 next year while the government declared a 26-day ceasefire  from December 20 to January 15 next year.

According to Capt. Christian Uy, spokesman of the Army’s 4th ID, rebels strafed the group of Peace and Development Team of Philippine Army at around 6:30 p.m. in Barangay Kalabugao, Impasugong, Bukidnon.

The incident resulted in the killing of PFC Maruhom while the rebels withdrew when they noticed the government forces  on their defensive mode.
