PROGUN CANDIDATES 2016
PROGUN respectfully endorses the following candidates for the 2016 elections.
President - GRACE POE. As Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Public Order and Illegal Drugs, Senator Poe was instrumental in 2014 when she listened to our call regarding the need to amend the oppressive provisions of IRR of RA 10591. Sen. Poe, through her pro-gun staff in the secretariat, promptly called a committee hearing between the PNP, stakeholders and licensed gun owners to mediate a compromise in amending the IRR. The effort was not successful, but we saw the clear effort on her part and willingness to help the gun owners. Later, Sen. Poe made a clear and open stand in supporting the licensed gun owners and gun dealers against the oppressive policies and implementation of the oppressive IRR by then Chief PNP Gen. Alan Purisima. In doing so Sen. Poe heeded the call of the gun owners and stuck her neck out for us. While other candidates may claim to be pr0-gun, the track record of Sen. Poe in standing up for gun owners and heeding our concerns, is clear, open, and well-known.
Vice-President. No particularcandidate has expressed directly his or her support for gun owners and ownership. However, in 2009 SEN. GRINGO HONASAN directly met with PROGUN regarding our opposition to the anti-gun bill No. 6776; to the extent he delivered on his promise, but he later succumbed to pressure from the president GMA and the PNP (The bill was defeated in 2010 due to lack of material time to pass it in the Senate). In 2014 LENI ROBREDO, as congresswoman, was part of the Congressional Committee that investigated the PNP due to complaints of gun owners regarding the IRR, and possible amendment to RA 10591. In 2009 SEN. SONNY TRILLANES met with PROGUN in the PNP stockade where he was detained, regarding certain gun bills in the Senate; he listened to our concerns. Later, in 2014 Sen. Trillanes helped us in the Committee Hearing for Amendment of the IRR, by adding pressure to the PNP to amend the oppressive provisions of the IRR. Some candidates such as Sen. Chiz Escudero and Sen. Bong Bong Marcos areknown gun enthusiasts and have hosted PPSA shooting matches, but we have noevidence of their stand on gun bills in the Senate, and neither candidate has come out openly to support us.
Senator. SEN.TITO SOTTO has been open and consistent in supporting, listening, and acting upon the concerns of gun owners, as a member of the Senate Committee on Public Order and Illegal Drugs. RAFAEL ALUNAN, a founder of PNP SAF and expert in national security and counter terrorism is a known gun supporter and enthusiast. JERICHO PETILLA, former governor of Leyte, is a known gun supporter who frequents gun shows with his whole family. MANNY PACQUIAO is likewise a strong gun supporter who owns 20 licensed firearms. LEILA DE LIMA has gone on record in the media in stating that she is pro-gun. SAMUEL PAGDILAO was on the Congressional COmmittee that investigated the PNP due to complaints of gun owners with the IRR. SHERWIN GATCHALIAN, called PROGUN in consulting on forming a positive policy strategy on civilian firearms ownership, but we never saw this policy in its final form.Party List - AN WARAY nominee RAOUL "AWO" CREENCIA is a long time firearms supporter. As a former Justice of the Office of the Government Corporate Counsel, Awo Creencia consistently helped PROGUN connect with various entities in government during hs term.
